Patchy resemble patches of bright aurora interspersed with either diffuse aurora or clear skies. When we classify this type of aurora we are looking for:
- Patches that are a variety of shapes: circular, elongated, or oval just to name a few
- They can be well defined with sharp edges or diffuse in nature with blurred boundaries
- They tend to be predominately green in color
